When Will was studying at the Royal College of Art he did not know what kind of artist he wanted to be or where his illustrations would take him in the future, he used this time to play around with his imagination and just see what he could develop without the “stress to impress” burden on his back. During this time he practiced a lot of different drawing techniques to find out what he liked doing, what processes to use and what techniques he enjoyed doing. Among other things he developed his skills with photoshop and computer techniques that can be used in conjunction with his illustrations.207
When will was asked what inspires him and keeps him motivated to keep drawing his reply was “I’m not much good at anything else apart from drawing, so a career change isn’t really on the cards…but aside from that I feel I have a real need to do it, I have a lot of half-formed stories in my head that I want to realise. If I don’t create something for any length of time I feel kind of useless…I feel very lucky to be in a position where people pay me to to create pictures.
Also, the world is full of incredible images; art, architecture, animals, plants, mystical legends, psychedelic LP covers, World War II aircraft, analogue synthesizers, guitar FX pedals, carnival costumes, tribal masks, magical talismans, weird food and strange stories….all these things keep me inspired.
